Getting it together with Sooky and the La La's
I have been jamming out some songs over the last week with my old pal Ben Woodward. He has hooked up a gig for us to play at the Grace Darling Hotel on Smith street this coming Saturday which is pretty cool and exciting.
Follow up:
It's going to be a baptism of fire as we have only had two rehearsals since we decided to form this band. I think we are onto a winning formula though, Nick has a huge sound when he plays on Organ, Ben has written beats (as well as most of the songs themselves), Genie is
slinging the tambourine and contributes her own lyrics and vocals and I've found myself playing lead guitar over the whole sonic boom.
Our Tambourine Supreme - Jean Genie with Nick-Knack
I'm most looking forward to the opportunity to be writing lead guitar parts. I think this is something I have needed for my own song writing for a long time - the chance to build song parts not just song structures (and lyrics) - which I think I am relatively good at now.
We have had two good rehearsals but now I finally have a recorded version of one of our jam sessions I can start to learn and create new guitar parts that go beyond just playing power chords. Though that too seems to work well for the overall sound. We seem to have a stoned-house-party-disco vibe, mostly as a result of the heavy organ use, so a bit of rough and whining guitar should fill out the songs.
I have today and tomorrow to work some stuff out, we have rehearsed six tracks so far, some of which go on for up to ten minutes and are generally improvised beyond the basic verse/chorus changes. Ben seems to rename the songs every second or third meet (he was jamming with nick and genie before I joined up), which is why it's important that I learn my own parts - at least he won't be changing them!
Anyway, practice makes perfect!
